Learning California Bird Sounds
Field Trips (2008)

Participation in these field trips is restricted to members of Sylvia Gallagher's
2008 Learning California Bird Sounds workshop.

General Remarks
All field trips start at 8:00 a.m. unless indicated otherwise.
No reservations are necessary. Just come whenever and as often as you can.
If too many people show up for one party, the group will be split up. (Fifteen people is about the maximum number for successful aural birding.)
An annual pass to Orange County Parks might be a good investment. Buy it at any park.
Real rain--not the threat of showers--cancels.
If you go and the coordinator doesn't show up, organize your own birding.
Many of the new trips are some distance from Orange County and will last into the afternoon for those who are interested.
Bring lunch; carry water and snacks. Be prepared for insects and warm/hot weather, as well as cold mornings.

Field Trip Locations
All locations where trips have been scheduled are listed in case someone wants to meet a group there for a revisit.

Meet at free CalTrans parking lot west of 57 Fwy and carpool into park.
FROM NORTHBOUND 57 FWY: Exit at Via Verde. Left on Via Verde (you'll be on the overpass) and turn right into the CalTrans parking lot just over the fwy.
FROM SOUTHBOUND 57 FWY: Exit at Via Verde. Left on Via Verde and immediate left into CalTrans parking lot.

Canyon Community Park, Costa Mesa (connects to Talbert Nature Preserve; Free.)
FROM SOUTHBOUND 55 FWY: Take the 55 Fwy to just past where it ends in Costa Mesa. Right on 19th St. After about 3/4 mile, right on Monrovia, then immediate left on Arbor. After a very short distance turn right into the park and drive to parking lot at the far end of the road.

Carbon Canyon Regional Park, near Brea & Placentia (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
Exit the 57 Fwy at Lambert Rd. and drive east 2.5 miles. Entrance is on the right. Meet by the tennis courts.

Caspers Wilderness Park, east of San Juan Capistrano (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
FROM I-5 IN SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. Exit on Ortega Hwy. and drive east 8 miles. The park entrance is on the left. Ask the attendant at the gate for directions to the Old Corral Picnic Area near the far end of the main park road. Assemble just past the conspicuous windmill at the sign saying, "GUIDED NATURE WALK MEETS HERE."

Dana Point & vicinity (No fees at first 2 locations, but possible fees if we go elsewhere)
Meet at Badlands Park. Exit westbound off I-5 at Crown Valley Pkwy. Drive about 3.5 miles, then turn right on Alicia Pkwy. At the next intersection, Pacific Island Dr., turn left. About 1.5 miles up Pacific Island Dr., turn right on Ocean Way. Turn left at the first street you come to. Park along this street and walk down to the end of the cul-de-sac, and meet where you see the beginning of the path. Habitat is maritime chaparral and eroded cliffs, with the possibility of California Gnatcatcher, Greater Roadrunner, and maybe even a Rock Wren, along with other brushland birds. View of the Pacific Ocean is spectacular. After birding here, we may go to other locations, such as Seaview Park, Salt Creek Regional Park and Doheny Beach State Park.

De Forest Park, North Long Beach (Free)
The park is east of the Los Angeles River just southeast of the junction of the 91 Fwy and I-710. FROM WESTBOUND 91 FWY: Exit at Atlantic Blvd. So south on Atlantic less than a mile to Harding St. Go west several blocks to De Forrest St. Go left to first parking lot near tennis courts.

El Dorado Park, Long Beach (Entry fee, but it's sometimes not collected on Mondays)
The park is just west of I-605 between the 91 Fwy and I-405. FROM SOUTHBOUND I-605: Exit at Spring St. Turn right at 1st signal and enter the park. After entering, go left and meet in 1st parking lot near archery range. FROM NORTHBOUND I-605: Exit at Willow St. Go west to Studebaker. Go right to Spring St. Go right less than 1 mile. Go left at signal into park. After entering go left and meet in 1st parking lot near archery range.

EV Canyon and Mt. Baldy area. (7:00 a.m. start from carpool location. No fee)
We'll carpool from the CVS Pharmacy parking lot at 775 E. Foothill Blvd., Pomona. Directions from Orange Co: Take the 57 Fwy north, then I-210 east. Exit right at Towne Ave and go south. The CVS Pharmacy is in the shopping center on the right just before Foothill Blvd.

Huntington Central Park, Huntington Beach (Free)
EAST SIDE TRIPS MEET IN THE SLATER ST. PARKING LOT. The park is between Pacific Coast Highway and I-405 (San Diego Freeway) in Huntington Beach. Take Goldenwest Street south from I-405 or north from PCH to the Slater St. traffic signal. Turn east and drive about 100 yards. Then turn right into the parking lot, which is in a grove of eucalyptus trees.
WEST SIDE TRIPS MEET BEHIND THE "BREAKFAST IN THE PARK" CAFE.Take Goldenwest St. south from I-405 or north from PCH Slater St. Turn west and drive to Edwards (the 1st signal). Turn south and drive to Varsity/Central Park Dr. (the 1st stop sign). Turn left, go to the end of the street, then south to far end of the parking lot, but do not park in the portion marked for the cafe.

Irvine Regional Park, east of Orange & north of Tustin. (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
DIRECTIONS: The park is northeast of the junction of Chapman Ave., Jamboree Rd. and Santiago Canyon Rd. See map below. After entering the park, make an immediate right, then an immediate left into the first parking lot.

Lake Arrowhead & vicinity (No fee)
This is a two-day field trip. You'll go to different places each day. You can come for either or both days. Linda Gray has invited anyone to stay overnight at her home in Lake Arrowhead. If you want to do this, call her (phone numbers on list of trip coordinators). Otherwise, no reservations are necessary. Just meet at her house at 8:00 a.m. Plan on a full day of birding each day--until you get tired (Linda never gets tired!). Linda has all sorts of bird-attracting features in her yard, so you'll enjoy just sitting around her place part of the time.

There are several ways to get to Linda's home from Orange Co., but Linda prefers this route: Take the 91 Fwy east, then I-215 north. In northern San Bernardino transition to the 30 Fwy east. After about a mile exit onto northbound state hwy. 18 (Waterman Cyn. Rd.). Follow it all the way to Daley Canyon Rd., which heads toward Blue Jay. After about 1/2 mile turn right at the stop sign onto state hwy. 189. Drive about a mile, then turn left (at McDonalds restaurant) onto North Bay Rd. Follow this road 2-3 miles to Alpen Dr. and turn left. Linda's house is shortly past Zurich St. on the left. Address: 27380 Alpen, but house number may be hard to see. Look for a bear sculpture in front with "Howdy" sign attached.

Bring lunch, water, snacks for both days. The AAA map of the San Bernardino Mtns. might be helpful, if you're a member. If you stay overnight, you'll probably eat in a local restaurant. Linda is an experienced aural birder and is very familiar with the area. Although she is not currently in the workshop, she has done it several times.

Mason Regional Park, Irvine. (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
FROM I-405 SOUTHEAST OF THE 55 FWY: Exit on Culver southbound. At University turn right. Entrance to the park is on the south side of University, about midway between Culver and Harvard. After entering the park, turn right and go to the first parking lot on the right.

Peters Canyon Regional Park, Tustin. (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
Directions from I-5: Take Jamboree north to Canyon View Ave. Turn left & the park entrance will be a few hundred feet on your left. Directions from the 55 fwy: Take Chapman Ave. east. After crossing over the Orange hills, turn right onto Jamboree. A short distance later turn right onto Canyon View and then left into the park.

Prado Basin Wetlands, near Corona & Norco. (OC Water District constructed wetlands; no fee)
From Orange County via SR 71: Take the 91 Fwy to State Route. 71. Drive north on 71 about 3 miles and branch right onto northbound Euclid (State Hwy. 83). After about 2 miles turn right onto Pine Ave. After 1 mile turn right onto Chino Corona Rd. After about 3/4 mile this road makes an abrupt left turn at a stop sign, retaining the name Chino Corona. About 1_ miles past the stop sign turn right onto Hellman Rd. Continue about a mile to where Hellman makes a 90_ turn to the left to River Rd. Instead of turning, continue straight (off Hellman and River Rd., going under the bullhorns) and follow the asphalt road to the Orange County Water District field trailer on the left.

From Orange County via SR 91: Take the 91 past SR 71 about 3-4 miles and exit northbound onto Lincoln Ave. After a little over a mile, turn left onto River Rd. After about 2.5 miles, make the first left after crossing the bridge over the Santa Ana River (still River Rd.). Continue about 3/4 mile until River Rd. makes a 90_ turn to the right to become Hellman. Turn left off River Rd. (under the bullhorns) and follow the asphalt road to the Orange County Water District field trailer on the left.

San Jacinto State Wildlife Area, Lakeview. 17050 Davis Road. (Entry fee)
Meet at headquarters (Call Pam to carpool from Claremont. She can coordinate carpools from Orange Co.)
FROM ORANGE CO:
Take 91 Fwy east to the far edge of Riverside. Southeast on I-215. Exit onto eastbound Ramona Expressway. In the small community of Lakeview turn left (north) on Davis Rd. After about 1 mile turn right into the parking lot for refuge headquarters.

San Joaquin Wildlife Area, Irvine. (Sea and Sage Audubon headquarters; Free.)
FROM I-405 SOUTHEAST OF THE 55 FWY: Exit on Jamboree southbound. At 1st signal (Michelson) turn left. Go to 4th signal (Riparian View) and turn right. Follow the signs and the dike road to where it ends with a descent to the parking area. Meet in front of Audubon House.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park, Orange. . (Entry fee or OC Parks pass)
FROM THE 55 FWY BETWEEN THE 91 AND 22 FWYS: Exit eastbound onto Katella. Drive east to Windes Dr. (3.2 miles, signal at corner). Don't worry about the fact that the road changes its name twice en route--first to Villa Park Rd., then to Santiago Canyon Rd. Watch for the sign directing you to turn left to Santiago Oaks Regional Park. Even though the road was actually named for a pioneering family, Windes Drive does "wind" for about 0.7 mile before ending at the park entrance. Meet in the only parking lot. IF SANTIAGO OAKS IS CLOSED, as it occasionally is after heavy rains, go to IRVINE PARK. To get there, return to Santiago Canyon Rd. Turn left and drive about 2 miles. Where Santiago Canyon Rd. makes a sharp right turn, go straight ahead to the park entrance. After entering the park, make an immediate right, then an immediate left into the first parking lot. This is also a county park, so the same fees apply.

Starr Ranch Audubon Sanctuary, east of Rancho Santa Margarita. ($5 per person except for Friends of Starr Ranch.) Please note: This area is not generally open to the public. Call Starr Ranch for permission to hold field trip there. (949) 858-0309. From the north: Exit I-5 in Mission Viejo at northeast-bound Alicia Parkway. Follow it to its end. Right on Santa Margarita Pkwy. to its end. Right on Plano Trabuco Rd. Left on Dove Canyon Dr.to Dove Canyon security gate (visitor's entrance). Tell security guard you're going to Starr Ranch for the "Sounds Field Trip." Stay on Dove Canyon Dr,down hill, up hill, to left on Grey Rock Rd, then second right on our access road (just before our 3 white mailboxes). Stay on our main single-lane road and follow signs to parking. Continue past the Sanctuary Office and proceed across a wooden bridge to the parking area by a wooden fence. From the south: See a map for possible faster access via San Antonio Pkwy.

Sycamore Canyon, Whittier. (No fee.)
Take I-5 northwest from Orange Co. Transition to northbound I-405 in Whittier, take the Beverly Blvd. exit and drive east less than a mile to Workman Mill Rd. Turn left and go about 1/4 mile. Meet in the Sycamore Canyon parking lot on the right. (If you reach Rose Hills, you've gone too far.)

Tonner Canyon/Firestone Scout Reservation, north of Brea. (7:00 a.m . start; no fee)
From northbound 57 Fwy north of Brea, exit at Tonner Cyn. Rd. Turn left onto Tonner Cyn. Rd. at end of off ramp. Line up on shoulder in front of entry gate. Be on time.
From southbound 57 Fwy, exit at Brea Cyn. Rd. Turn right onto Brea Cyn. Rd. alongside the freeway. Left at Tonner Cyn. Rd. Line up on shoulder in front of the entry gate. Be on time.

Torres-Martinez Indian Reservation, South of Indio.at north end of Salton Sea. (Reservations required.)
This interesting area, located where the Whitewater River flows into the Salton Sea, was always a favorite of birders, but was closed off a few years back. Now it has been restored and reopened on a limited basis. Seven ponds have been created from a few inches to six feet deep, and up to 20 acres in area. Some 400 species of birds nest [sic? occur?] in the area, including endangered species such as the California Least Tern and Yuma Clapper Rail. Directions from I-10 in Indio: Transition to southbound State Route 86. At Ave. 66 (huge ARCO station on corner), turn left. Drive about 1.5 miles to Lincoln Ave. (just before SR 111) and turn right. Go to the end of the road. Plan on a walking tour of 3 to 4 hours. Carry PLENTY of water and snacks; it could get hot. The location is about 150 miles from Orange County, and you should allow about 2_ hours driving time. Contact Tom Eastman to arrange carpools and to make a reservation if you didn't sign up at the workshop.

Upper Newport Bay, Big Canyon Area, Newport Beach. (Free.)
FROM PCH OR I-405. Take Jamboree Rd. south from I-405 or north from PCH. Turn west on San Joaquin Hills Rd. (signal). The road ends in about half a mile at Back Bay Drive. Turn right and follow the road to the paved parking lot on the left--about 1/2 mile. (If Back Bay Drive is closed, park along San Joaquin Hills Rd. short of the junction and wait in your car for further instructions. We may be able to walk in, or we may have to go to another place.)

Whittier Narrows Nature Center, north of Whittier.
From the junction of I-605 and the 60 Fwy, take 60 west about 1.5 mi. to southbound Santa Anita Ave. South less than a mile to Durfee. Left 1/4 mile to nature center entrance on right.

Wilderness Glen Park, Mission Viejo. (No fee.)
Exit I-5 at El Toro. Drive northeast about 2 miles, then turn right on Trabuco Rd. Drive about 1 mile and turn left on Los Alisos Blvd. Drive about 0.5 mile and turn left on Via Noveno. Destello is the first street on the right. Meet at the corner of Via Noveno and Destello. This park has a nice trail through riparian and coastal sage scrub habitat. Lots of birds. Afterwards we may visit the nearby Vista del Lago Open Space.

Wrightwood area, including Grassy Hollow. (7:00 a.m. start from carpool location. No fee.)
We'll carpool from the same CVS parking lot listed above for EV Canyon and Mt. Baldy.

Field Trip Coordinators

The following people have agreed to meet groups and show them where the birds are in various parks and refuges. It's up to you, the participant, to help make them a success by locating bird sounds, both those you know and those you don't.

Don't phone of email the leader unless you have a specific question not covered in the preceding material. It is NOT NECESSARY TO MAKE A RESERVATION FOR ANY TRIP. See list of field trip coordinators after the revised field trip schedule.

Additional Field Trips after the Workshop is Over
I'd love to add more coordinators to the list--and more places to visit. How about it? Do you have a favorite? It can be a return visit to one of the places already listed; just because someone else coordinated a trip there doesn't mean you can't do it, too. Two trips on the same day are no problem. It can also be a visit to a new place anywhere in southern California. The Sound Search continues through August 9. SEND THE FOLLOWING INFO TO NANCY KENYON, webmaster, at ; she will post the information on this webpage on a special SOUNDS SEARCH page.
Your name, phone number, and email
  Date of trip
  Name of place
Directions to the meeting place from some major freeway—including precise location in large parks, etc.
(Be sure to mention any entry fee - if one is needed)
  Any other important information
I hope there will be continuing interest in the SEARCH as our summer visitors come back and establish territories and as all the birds fledge young and they begin to vocalize. Late summer adult subsongs are also fun to listen to.

Revised Field Trip Schedule (6/13/08)
These are the only trips scheduled so far for the remainder of the Sounds Search period. All participants are urged to add trips to the schedule. So far no one has volunteered for July or early August. Remember, you don't have to know all the birds--just the location(s) you think might be interesting to visit. Returns to places visited earlier would be good.

Schedule is subject to change. Check this webpage or contact the coordinator before the event. Also check this website periodically for additional field trips.

To add trips or to make changes to the schedule, email . (Nancy checks her email several times a day.)

These field trips are for workshop participants only.
Exceptions may be made for the Torres-Martinez and Lake Arrowhead trips, but only with the permission of the trip coordinator. Guests will be required to sign the liability release form.
