June 7 - Update from Lana

Hello Volunteers!

We have chicks on the ground, and even feathered chicks on the ground! As of yesterday, we have 462 nests with 48 new nests initiated since Friday. We still have a very active colony and eggs on ground. We were able to remove one of the American kestrels from the colony, and based on your reports it appears to have made a big difference! Thanks for your diligence; your reports helped us target our efforts and be as efficient as we could be with our limited resources.

Something else to watch for: one of the adult ospreys from the Osprey nest behind the colony up the river appears to like the vegetation inside the colony and has been seen multiple times collecting nesting material. The terns are not fans and have been dive bombing, but so far no predation has been observed (we wouldn’t really expect any…)

Thanks and let me know what you guys are seeing out there!
