June 26 - A Message from David Pryor

I just read a note on Peter Knapp seeing the Cheryl Egger and Wildlife Care Center raised and banded chicks at Bolsa Chica- a true success!

I'm sending Cheryl Searcy's log of today that has, as far as I know, the first Gull-billed Terns seen at Huntington State Beach. This is the species I fear because of the unknown damage they can do to the chicks. The situation may not be significant if they are just passing through and not nesting in the area. This is one to keep an eye out for.

On Sunday the 22nd, Doug Lithgow saw an American Kestrel take a chick. The same note regarding a potential nearby nest.

With the nest count at 451, 125 chicks, and our first fledglings spotted, we need to be most aware of chick predators and report active predation or the threat. We would like to get counts of fledglings roosting on the beach front too. In this way, we can help the monitors get a good count of this stage in their development.

Thanks to all the volunteers and the great observations being made.

David Pryor

Information from Cheryl Searcy's Data Sheet 5/26/08:
California Least Terns: 2 tiny chicks noted in the newly fenced front yard.
3 fledglings observed (1 on the beach, 2 in large enclosure)
Comments/Observations:  2 Gull-billed Terns on the beach with one Forster's Tern.
