June 7 - HB Least Tern Preserve News

It was bound to happen at any time- with the colony in full swing, hundreds of nests, twice as many eggs, and our first wave of chicks moving about the colony, now the predators come. Kate Grabenstien and I both witnessed a male American kestrel hover and take a chick at ~1100 this morning. This bird was not particularly bothered by the terns that swooped by as it hovered above the colony. It moved and hovered in a few locations until it saw that little movement in the sand, then stooped to take its prey. As is typical, the chick was taken to a PCH power pole for processing- removal of wings for ease of transport towards Banning Ranch.

Wally Ross was called and asked about a profile of feeding times. So far, we have this one observation and he said he would come and try to live trap this individual tomorrow moring.

Your observations about predators are important to help prevent continued colony harassment. Call Wally or I if you see any predation about the colony. And, thanks for helping out.
