May 29 - HB Least Tern numbers report from Cyndie

Hi Everyone,
Here are the numbers for last week (ending 5/29):
Date Total # of Nests Total Depredated  Nests Total Active Nests Total # of Eggs Total # of Chicks
5/29/09 338 1 337 606 1
Comments:
The numbers are continuing to go up, with very few depredations (especially compared to last year!). And on Friday we saw our first chick of the season (found in the front yard). We were still seeing a few pairs courting and making scrapes in the sand. We saw one crow on Friday swoop down into the preserve, to be quickly (and aggressively) chased away by the terns. There was no other unusual activity.

Have a great week!
