Aird, Leader
Trip
Bird List with comments by Bruce:
Mallard - great!
start off the list with something goofy!… Turkey Vulture -
5 or 6 of them, luckily, none of them carrying forks, Cooper's
Hawk - 2 seen, a circling female, and a male carrying
prey, Red-tailed Hawk - several adult birds soaring,
Gambel's Quail - many heard throughout the day but
few seen, Mourning Dove - several buzzing over, a few seen
perched, White-throated Swift - many seen and heard feeding
very high in the sky, Anna's Hummingbird - on the
trail and at the feeders, Costa's Hummingbird - a
great little male at the feeders, Black-chinned Hummingbird
- many of both genders at the feeders, Ladder-backed
Woodpecker - about a half dozen seen and heard well (sounds
like a Downy!), Nuttall's Woodpecker - one heard chattering
several times in the morning, Northern Flicker - heard
exactly twice, calling in the distance, Olive-sided Flycatcher
- many seen, none heard ("Whip! Three beers!"), Western
Wood-Pewee- many seen, one heard prior to 7:00 am, Hammond's
Flycatcher -possibly the most numerous empid on the day, all
silent! Dusky Flycatcher - at least 3 identified, mostly
down by the creek - tough call to make!!Gray Flycatcher -
at least 3 seen, identified by the downward tail pumping, Pacific-slope
Flycatcher - at least 6-8 observed and heard - the only empid
talking! Black Phoebe - all over the field by the bathrooms,
Say's Phoebe - one bird observed by the bathrooms before
7:00, Vermilion Flycatcher - in the cottonwoods and fields
by Covington Park, Ash-throated Flycatcher - many seen
and heard, mostly down towards the river, Brown-crested Flycatcher
- several well seen over the Marsh Loop, Cassin's Kingbird
- many seen and heard, Western Kingbird - many seen,
a few heard (pale gray head, white outer tail retrices), Western
Scrub-Jay - doubtless a big thrill to Orange County birders…,
Common Raven - surprisingly few at the preserve itself,
but common elsewhere, Verdin - one well seen and
heard by the Barn Loop, Bushtit - heard a few times in
denser cover, Cactus Wren - one singing early on the Mesquite
Loop, Bewick's Wren - ubiquitous, noisy, charming! (same
as Bruce except for "charming"), House Wren - frequent
all over, many nesting pairs, Gnatcatcher species
- probable migrant Blue-gray, mewing like a tiny cat, unconfirmed,
Swainson's Thrush - staggeringly numerous - at least
2 dozen on the day, Northern Mockingbird - song easily
overlooked by suburban birders (but not by Bruce), California
Thrasher - one bird all day, briefly seen by a few,
heard singing by a few more, Phainopepla - many seen
fly-catching, the misteltoe birds! European Starling -
only 2 observed, hence, only 2 too many! Bell's Vireo -
(endangered sub-sp.) the "gossip" bird, several heard by all in
the morning, none seen,
