Starr Ranch Field Trip – Bell Canyon Road (May 16, 2026)
Join our seasonal ornithologist, James Leo, for a guided walk along Bell Canyon Road at the 4,000-acre Starr Ranch Audubon preserve in southeast Orange County. This gentle dirt road crosses a couple of wooden single-plank bridges and offers excellent opportunities to see local birds and other wildlife such as Oak Titmouse, California Gnatcatcher, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Acorn Woodpecker, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Band-tailed Pigeon, Bell’s Vireo, Black-headed Grosbeak, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Bobcat and Mule Deer.
Our walk will cover about 1‑1.75 miles depending on how far down the road the group goes. We’ll meet at 9:00 AM and finish around noon. Please plan to arrive 10‑15 minutes early so we can start on time.
Please wear shoes suitable for walking, long pants, a hat and sunscreen. Bring your own water and feel free to pack a lunch to enjoy in our picnic area after the walk. Please drive very slowly (10 MPH) on our one-lane country road. Bell Canyon is a major corridor for mountain lions. Do not walk on the ranch without your instructor.
When you register, you will receive a release of liability form to sign and bring with you. Please use the registration link to reserve your spot.
