Starr Ranch Field Trip – Loop Trail (May 13, 2026)

Join our seasonal ornithologist, James Leo, for a guided walk around the Loop Trail at the 4,000‑acre Starr Ranch Audubon preserve in southeast Orange County. This moderately strenuous loop trail includes one steep uphill and one downhill stretch and offers excellent opportunities to see local birds and other wildlife such as Oak Titmouse, California Gnatcatcher, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Acorn Woodpecker, Red‑tailed Hawk, Red‑shouldered Hawk, Band‑tailed Pigeon, Bell’s Vireo, Black‑headed Grosbeak, Orange‑crowned Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Bobcat and Mule Deer.

Our walk will cover about 1.5‑2 miles (less if the group takes a shortcut back). We’ll meet at 9:00 AM and finish around noon. Please plan to arrive 10‑15 minutes early so we can start on time.

Please wear shoes suitable for walking, long pants, a hat and sunscreen. Bring your own water and feel free to pack a lunch to enjoy in our picnic area after the walk. Please drive very slowly (10 MPH) on our one‑lane country road. Starr Ranch is a major corridor for mountain lions. Do not walk on the ranch without your instructor, James.

When you register, you will receive a release of liability form to sign and bring with you. Please use the registration link to reserve your spot.
