Big Morongo Canyon Preserve!

Join us for a relaxing, immersive day of bird watching at the stunning Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, one of Southern California’s premier birding hotspots. Nestled at the foot of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, this lush desert oasis boasts a rare combination of year-round water, cottonwood-willow riparian woodland, and Mojave scrub habitats that attract an incredible diversity of resident and migratory birds.

Trip Details

  • Destination: Big Morongo Canyon Preserve (Morongo Valley, CA)
  • Date: Saturday, May 15, 2027
  • Time: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • Meeting Spot: Main parking lot / Visitor Center entrance at 8:00 AM sharp
  • Activity Level: Easy to Moderate (Flat boardwalks and well-maintained dirt trails, approx. 2 to 3 miles of leisurely walking)

 What We Hope to See

Big Morongo is a major stopover along the Pacific Flyway. Depending on the season, we’ll be keeping our binoculars ready for species such as:

  • Vermilion Flycatchers
  • Phainopeplas
  • Summer Tanagers
  • Least Bell’s Vireos
  • Various migratory warblers, tanagers, and hummingbirds
  • Resident quail, thrashers, and hawks

What to Bring

  • Binoculars 
  • Field Guide
  • Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots
  • Sun protection (Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen)
  • Layers (Morning desert temperatures can be crisp, warming up quickly)
  • Water (At least 1 to 2 liters) and a light snack or lunch
  • Camera for capturing wildlife and scenery

Important Notes

  • Cost: Free admission! (Donations to the preserve are always welcome).
  • Restrooms: Available near the parking lot and visitor center.
  • Leave No Trace: Please pack out all trash and respect local wildlife and plant life.
